RECENT PARACONSISTENT DEATH

Jon Michael Dunn (1941-2021)

I interviewed Mike Dunn for the paraconsistent newsletter for the 2018 fall edition where he started by saying "I am a kind of accidental paraconsistent logician." Mike is known in particular for the so-called Belnap-Dunn's logic of which he is the originator (Nuel Belnap was his advisor). I published Mike's PhD The Algebra of Intensional Logics with an introductory essay by Katalin Bimbó in the Logic PhDs book series I have founded and I am managing at College Publications.

I met Mike in person at the 1st World Congress on Paraconsistency in Ghent, Belgium, 1997. I remember that during the event he said that Graham Priest at first wanted to put the event under the banner of "dialetheism" and that it was good that it has not been the case.

I started to discuss and to make friendship with him in Moscow in May 2001 where we had both been invited to be speakers at the 3th Smirnov's Reading (in the above picture together with A.Karpenko and V.Vasyukov). I subsequently invited him to be keynote speaker at the 1st UNILOG: World Congress and School on Universal Logic in Montreux in 2005, and to be a member of the board of the journal Logica Universalis. Like me, Mike had more interest for general stuff than for a specific particular system of logic.

The last time I met him was in October 2017 in Haifa at the 3rd ISRALOG: Research Workshop of the Israel Science Foundation where he presented the talk "The Paradox of the Two Firefighters: A Paraconsistent Logic Solution and a Probability Solution".
